BERNIER, OLIVIER
Lafayette - Hero of Two Worlds
New York, E.P. Dutton. 1983, First Edition. (ISBN: 0525241817). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. xvii + 356 pages. 30 illustrations. First edition, first printing. This witty biography, much of which is based on previously unaccessible materials, is the first life of the Marquis de Lafayette that gives equal treatment to his American and French experiences. In the war for American Independence, the 21 year old was a stubborn, tenacious, and ultimately victorious commander, the favourite of George Washington. Returning to Paris, he was soon caught up in the 1789 Revolution, first as its champion, then as guardian of the King, finally as the only man capable of maintaining order in Paris in 1790 and 1791. Once the King fled the capital, however, Lafayette's position became untenable and he was forced to escape to Belgium, but there the right wing emigres considered him a traitor, and he was transported to Austria, where he languished in prison for years. Washington and others secured his release and return to France, but with Napoleon fearing him as a rival, he went into self-imposed exile. NOT EX LIB 22. Fine/Fine.

FARR, EVELYN
Marie Antoinette and Count Axel Fersen - the Untold Love Story
London, Peter Owen. 1995, First Edition. (ISBN: 0720609607). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with gold title on green boards with near Fine dustjacket which is price clipped. 256 pages. 7 illustrations. The life and tragic death of Marie Antoinette have over the centuries assumed almost mythical proportions. During her lifetime she was the 'Austrian whore', accused of every imaginable sexual and political crime, and in the 19th century the guilt-ridden French tried to atone for their wrongs by reinventing her as a saint, pure and unsullied. Her love for her Swedish paramount, the chivalrous Count Axel Fersen, was glossed over or suppressed. In this book Evelyn Farr peels back layers of misinformation which have continued to obscure the fateful story of the Queen's great love affair. L. Fine/Near Fine.
